We aimed to bridge the connection between light and architecture and develop solutions for intricate three-dimensional geometric structures that span across vast indoor and outdoor areas. By highlighting the sculptural elements of the fundamental architectural design, we were able to achieve a more organic outcome where the interaction between light and architecture becomes consistent.

An exciting journey along the Caspian Sea coast.
In Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center is a remarkable landmark that has left an indelible mark on the history of Azerbaijan's Caspian Sea coastline. It features a concert and conference hall, art galleries, library, media center, museum, communal spaces, indoor parking facility, artificial lake and cafeteria. The architectural design of the Center was notably enhanced by Helvar's energy-efficient lighting control system.
The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center in Baku, designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, is an impressive example of her signature flowing and curved aesthetic. Spanning 57.507 square meters, this center serves as a vibrant venue for a wide range of cultural and artistic activities including exhibitions, conferences, concerts and forums. It intricately weaves together language, culture and historical significance into its architectural fabric.
MBLD created a lighting solution for the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center, enhanced by Helvar's energy-saving lighting control system. A user-friendly programming system has been implemented for both indoor and outdoor events at the center, resulting in an enhanced user experience and improved efficiency of the lighting systems through controlled monitoring.
Aniket Gore, the project's lighting designer and one of the MBLD partners, explains that the lighting is designed to adapt to the constantly changing three-dimensional geometry of the space and highlight its sculptural features. He also mentions how innovative lighting details are subtly incorporated into the building, enhancing the texture of surfaces and providing indirect lighting in a seamless manner.
In the auditorium, a reliable lighting system was essential for operating without flickering at low light levels. Helvar effectively addressed the potential issue of flickering caused by energy-efficient LED lamps with updated driver software and their own lighting control equipment. This solution successfully provided non-flickering stage lighting at low intensity, resolving the challenge efficiently.
In the words of Aniket Gore, "The lighting design of the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center was an exciting, challenging and informative journey that included a series of three-dimensional lighting researches that required the study of various models and the realization of a series of lighting trials on site in order to achieve the lighting effect we dreamed of."

MBLD designed a lighting solution for the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center, complete with Helvar's energy-efficient lighting control system. A simple programming system was designed for the events to be held in the indoor and outdoor spaces of the center, and thanks to this programming, the user experience was improved while the efficiency of the lighting systems was controlled and monitored.
According to Aniket Gore, the lighting designer of the project and also a partner of MBLD, “The lighting responds to the needs of the constantly changing three-dimensional geometry and expresses the sculptural features of the building. "Innovative lighting details, unobtrusively integrated into the fabric of the building, lightly touch the surface of the huge lobby connecting all the main event venues, modeling the texture of this surface and providing indirect illumination."
